A Must See Historical Collection of Interest to All Ages.

The William T. Lauder Museum, establised in 1973, is operated by the Amityville Historical Society as a community, cultural and educational institution. The Museum provides an attractive home, where the memorabilia of Amityville's past may be collected, preserved and exhibited.

The Historical Society strives to encourage interest in the preservation of our community's history and to ensure a means whereby future generations can relate to the past. A Historical Research Library is housed in the Museum to provide a unique collection of written works relating to the history of the local area. The developemant and growth of this special Library has proved to be an important resource for the study of community history.

Special Historical Programs are presented by the Historical Society for the enjoyment and cultural interest of the community and it's visitors.

Historical Amityville

Amityville means 'friendly village' known for its charming Victorian homes. It was first settled in the 1600's as the 'friendly bay village' primarily as a farming community that had strong ties to the fishing and boating industries. Salt hay was an important agri-product that was grown to feed livestock. But the farms and marine industries slowly gave way to the needs of summer visitors in search of the comforts afforded by the cool breezes and beaches of the Great South Bay. Beach side hotels became the lure for many summer visitors, from celebrities of the stage and theater, to prominent members of society, including businessmen, artists, writers and those known as the rich and famous from New York.
